Make OC Transpo an essential service

Please be aware that because I have had a lot of people signing simply their first name, I have had to make the petition signatures all be approved personally by me. On December 10th, 2008, the workers of OC Transpo agreed to go on strike after failing to have reached a deal with the City of Ottawa. No deal has been reached thus far. Although, a federal mediator has been appointed to help keep the negotiations running. As the days since the strike has begun turn into weeks, it has become more and more apparent to make OC Transpo and essential service. OC Transpo services upwards of 350,000 people daily in two provinces, and this strike has forced those same people to scramble during the holiday season to find alternative ways to travel. Workers have trouble getting to work either on time, or altogether. This, of course, is also going on during the busiest time of the year in terms of retail sales and overall business.

OC Transpo is one of the most well run transit services in Ontario. These 350,000 people rely on that service to get to work, school, and to shop. OC Transpo needs to be made an essential service in order to ensure that these people are able to get to the places they need to go in order to keep the city running, and that a strike like the one currently happening can never be an option in the future. Such strikes are detrimental to the city. We, the undersigned, agree with that OC Transpo should be made an essential service immediately.
