Rein In The Superdelegates!

To:  Democratic Superdelegates

The Democratic Party has an odd hybrid system where the "will of the people" is respected through the apportionment of "elected delegate" in each state. The methodology of apportioning these delegates varies from state to state, but they all award delegates based on votes cast. This system may be messy but it respects the views of the minority.

The Superdelegates system is a last vestige of old school Democratic politics. These Superdelegates are party insiders, they are bye and large rich and influential elites, and they are free agents. They can vote for anyone they want. There has been a lot of discussion about the role these chosen few will play in determining the Democratic nominee for President.

We, the signatories of this petition, want to make it clear that the "will of the people" should not be subverted by insiders in "smoke filled rooms." If there truly is a process of picking the nominee on a state-by-state basis, then the will of the people should be absolute.

You, the Superdelegates, need to stay out of the way and out of the limelight until we, the people, have spoken. Additionally, once the people have spoken in Primaries and at Caucuses around this country, you, the Superdelegates, need to respect this decision and support the candidate with the most states, most delegates and most popular votes.

We believe that it is totally unacceptable for the Party insiders to overrule the will of us, the members of the Democratic Party and those who support our issues. To ignore our will is to insult our judgment. This will have consequences.

Let it be clear, that we are Democrats, Independent and reform minded Republicans. We do not endorse either Democratic candidate. The process outlined above should be the course regardless of whether it favors Senator Hillary Clinton or Senator Barack Obama.
