A call for rapid investigation of the Qur’an desecration in Ethiopia!
To: Ethiopian Government

• To the kind attention of His Excellency Mr. Meles Zenawi-Prime Minister of Ethiopia
• To the kind attention of His Excellency Mr.Seyoum Mesfin-Minister of the foreign affairs of Ethiopia.

It is rather unfortunate what we have heard and seen in recent weeks of what happened in Ethiopia of alleged Qur’an desecration!

We were deeply shocked hearing some university students in Ethiopia using a copy of the Qur’an for use as a toilet paper in order to offend Ethiopian Muslims!

This is not just offending Ethiopian Muslims, but also more than a billion Muslims around the world.

Every Muslim realizes that the Qur’an is his guide both for this world and for the hereafter. Muslims have great respect for the Qur’an to the extent that they can not even touch the copy of the Qur’an without being pure.

All Muslims around the world who heard of this news criticized such work and felt bad and dismayed about it. Similarly, we do believe that all sensible and wise people would feel the same.

We have always viewed Ethiopia as a peaceful country where there is a long lasting mutual respect between the Muslims and the Christian society since the message of Islam came to Ethiopia 5 years after the Prophet Muhammad (S.A) started his mission. When the persecution of Muslims increased in Makkah and some of his followers found it difficult to live in that environment, he allowed them to migrate to Ethiopia and seek the help of the Christian King there. The Muslims were shown much kindness in Abyssinia and found the life there very pleasant and comfortable.

We do understand that the current Ethiopian government is showing a much better freedom of faith than its preceding regime. But we are afraid to say the latest events are corrupting this image, not just in the eyes of Muslims but also around the world.

Freedom of faith is one of the basic human right principles. Any group or individual that violates such basic human right principle is liable. But effectiveness of constitutional right depends on executives’ initiative, competence and impartiality.

Non Muslims in the executive body of government may not feel the same pain as Muslims. Therefore, the Ethiopian Government should allow all Ethiopian Muslims to show their concern to the government how serious this devastating problem is.

Muslim “representatives” in Ethiopia must prove themselves as Muslim representatives and should earn credibility from the Muslims by mobilizing Muslims peacefully through demonstration, petition and other possible means to show their concern.

But more important of all:

“The Muslims all over the world demand the prosecution and punishment of those "who committed this crime (of desecration)!”

We expect that your kind government will react positively to this insult by showing the Muslim society your sincere and quick actions!

Awaiting your quick actions.

Sincerely,

The Undersigned
