Update March, 2008: The Gettysburg Battlefield Preservation Association (GBPA) has recently reported that the Target chain will NOT open a store on the Camp Letterman General Hospital site. However, commercial development , as well as a housing development are still current threats to the Camp Letterman site.

To:  S & A Homes, Target, and Any Other Potential Developers

Dear Developers,

We ask you to reconsider developing the area in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, that housed the Camp Letterman General Hospital from July-November 1863.

The Camp Letterman site was a “battlefield” in its own right. Union and Confederate soldiers lay side by side at Camp Letterman waging their own last battles for survival. They lay together there in life and in death...

For this reason, we believe the Camp Letterman site deserves not only to be preserved, but our never-ending respect.

Those who fought and served at Gettysburg would surely support the Camp Letterman cause today if they were with us. If for no other reason, it would be because it is the right thing to do. In honor of them, we petition today.

Sincerely,

The Undersigned
