Middle East Cease-fire

I will be submitting the petition this week. While the cease-fire in Lebanon is holding for now (8/15/2006), there is still the issue of fighting in Gaza.

To:  President George W. Bush

We, the undersigned, urgently demand that Government of the United States of America call for an immediate cease-fire by all participants in the current fighting in Lebanon, Israel and territories administered by the Palestinian Authority. Current American policy seems to be to let the fighting continue in the hopes that it will produce a result that is strategically beneficial to the United States with respect to its own rivals in the region. This policy puts at further risk Lebanese, Israeli and Palestinian civilians and further undermines our ability to be accepted as "honest brokers" in the region. While the combatants may feel their actions are justified and may not be receptive to peace overtures, the only ethical and responsible foreign policy choice for the United States is to steadfastly and vigorously advocate an immediate cease-fire and to offer a diplomatic framework to ease current tensions.
