Keep the Wrong One Out |
At the time of writing Abrams was listed as the person interested in the remake and it now appears to be in the hands of his director Matt Reeves at Overture where this will be sent when the signatures pile up.
To: J.J. Abrams and Hollywood film executives"Let the Right One In" is an amazing, original foreign film running the independent film circuit right now. It manages to cross horror with romance and the trials of adolescence, in a way no film has ever managed to. It manages all this in a setting that feels so familiar it naturally transcends the language and cultural differences. It is also about to be remade by a very unoriginal and pathetic Hollywood. This film is fresh and wonderful and manages to twist genres together in a way America has yet to do. The point is this film does not need a remake. A remake would be a slap in the face to Tomas Alfredson and fans of his film, denying him his due recognition, while someone else sits back and takes the credit for his vision. Why remake something that is already here and perfect. What it needs is a major release so all Americans can enjoy it for what it is. Abrams and other movie executives see a money making opportunity because they know this film is something great, but they also know ignorant and close-minded Americans will not watch subtitles, foreign characters, or androgynous themes with 12 year olds no less. This will be butchered and most likely made as a PG-13 rating for more money. It is truly unfortunate that the time and money to do a remake of this amazing film (that has yet to even finish it's first tour of the world) could be better spent on something original or better yet, spent on the major distribution of this film itself.
Dear Hollywood... get your own ideas, this time the right one has already been let in.Sincerely,
