Menu Labeling in DC

Dear Councilmember:





As your constituent, I would like to pledge my support for the DC Menu Education and Labeling Act. I believe that DC residents have the right to information on calories, saturated fat and trans fat, carbohydrates, and sodium on printed menus, and just calories on menu boards when dining in chain restaurants.





DC residents eat away from the home more than ever before, and more than the average American. Yet, very few restaurants provide nutrition information when you are ordering food. We are often eating more calories, fat and salt than we realize, and it is usually more than is considered a healthy amount. This is especially concerning for people with health conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease (the leading cause of death in the District of Columbia).





Restaurant menu labeling would give DC residents and visitors an important tool to help us make healthy, informed choices and would allow us to take responsibility for our health when dining out. Independent restaurants would not be burdened by this legislation because it would only affect restaurants with ten or more chains nationwide.
