Those who want today define themselves pagan or link themselves back to old religions, can’t ignore the history they are making their own. As we can’t pretend that nothing has changed and create an utopia of past revival by deleting the historical distance between us and the ancient ones, since the essence of pagan religio is also to live it in everyday life, so we can’t ignore that distance, avoiding looking at the past, and so risking of repeating the same errors.
The memory, above all memory of past obstacles, is something fundamental and we absolutely can’t pretend not to see slaughterings and destructions occurred to pagan people during history. A pagan person who wants to call him/herself in this way can’t believe that an excuse is enough to rub off the dust of temples destroyed by Constance and his successors, the blood of Saxons exterminated by Charlemagne, the ashes of witches burnt on a stake. And s/he can’t also bear that this happens in society in which s/he lives.
To look for and to give knowledge of these facts: this is the aim of this proposal of a European Pagan Memory Day, a day in which we can remember horrors in order to not forget them. But also a day in which celebrate the rebirth of paganism, because if there is a Pagan Memory Day, there are Pagan people who remember.
So we need to choose a date that all groups across Europe can celebrate, with actions of divulgation above all, and with rites that everyone feel to. Maybe it’s possible to institute a date for every European country, fixing a significant date for each, and it’s desirable that each country really does this. But I want to propose a common date, that can be considered significant in the process leading to the annihilation of paganism in Europe, process that lasted, starting from this date even though it began much earlier, almost one thousand year. This date is the 24th February: it was the year 391 e.v. and in this day was enacted Theodosius’ edict which forbade all forms of cult and even to look at statues. Other edicts were enacted the same year, but what is most important of all, and that made me choose this day, is that in that year Vesta’s fire was set off in Rome’s temple. A sign of the obscurantism that started under Constantine and was destined to spread until its triumph in 1386 e.v., the year of official conversion of Lithuania, last pagan country in Europe; eleven years ago, last Hierophant of Eleusi had already announced it.
The institution of an European Pagan Memory Day is therefore important for reconstruction of paganism that must be done over the ashes, still hot, of what remains of ancient paganism.

Chi oggi vuole definirsi pagano, o comunque riallacciarsi alle antiche religioni, non può ignorare la storia che egli fa propria. Come non si può far finta che nulla sia cambiato e ricreare un’utopia di rievocazione del passato, dal momento che l’essenza della religio pagana è anche il suo viverla nella vita, cancellando artificiosamente la distanza storica tra noi e gli antichi, così non si può ignorarla, evitando di guardare al passato, con il rischio di ripetere gli stessi errori.
La memoria soprattutto delle difficoltà passate è fondamentale e non si può assolutamente far finta di non vedere i massacri e le distruzioni a cui i pagani sono andati incontro nella storia. Un pagano che voglia dirsi tale non può credere che bastino delle scuse a cancellare con un colpo di spugna la polvere dei templi fatti abbattere da Costanzo e dai suoi successori, il sangue dei Sassoni sterminati da Carlo Magno, le ceneri delle streghe arse sul rogo. Né può sopportare che questo avvenga nella società in cui egli vive.
Cercare e dare la conoscenza di questi fatti: ecco lo scopo che si prefigge la proposta di un giorno pagano europeo della memoria, un giorno in cui ricordare gli orrori per non dimenticarli. Ma anche un giorno in cui celebrare la rinascita del paganesimo, perché se c’è un giorno pagano della memoria, significa che ci sono pagani che ricordano.
Occorre quindi fissare una data che tutti i gruppi possano celebrare, con attività di divulgazione innanzitutto, dato lo scopo della ricorrenza, e con i riti che ciascuno si sentirà. Probabilmente si potrebbe istituire un giorno della memoria per quante sono le nazioni europee, fissando una data significativa, ed è auspicabile che ogni gruppo pagano lo faccia davvero. Tuttavia propongo come data comune una data che può essere considerata significativa del processo di annientamento del paganesimo che prese il via in Europa e che durò, a partire da questa data, pur trattandosi di un processo cominciato molto prima, quasi un millennio esatto. La data è il 24 febbraio: l’anno era il 391 e.v. e in questo giorno fu emanato l’editto di Teodosio a carattere generale, che proibiva tutte le forme di culto e persino di guardare le statue degli dei. Altri ne seguirono lo stesso anno dello stesso tenore; ma quello che è più importante e che fa propendere per questa data è che quell’anno si spense il fuoco di Vesta nel tempio di Roma. Un simbolo dell’oscurantismo che, già cominciato in realtà sotto Costantino, era destinato a dilagare fino al 1386 e.v., con la conversione ufficiale della Lituania, ultimo paese europeo rimasto pagano, e che era già stato annunciato undici anni prima dall’ultimo Ierofante del culto di Eleusi.
L’istituzione di un giorno pagano europeo della memoria è per questo importante per la rifondazione del paganesimo che, purtroppo, deve avvenire sulle ceneri, anche se ancora calde, del paganesimo antico.
